The publisher Michal Słomka will present interesting comic book titles from this year’s rich array of Centrala’s publishing house, who also published the book Jarmil in India. Marek Rubec will showcase the sequel to the comic about the quirky and strange hero Jarmil, this time taking place in India.


The events portrayed at the beginning of Marek Rubec’s graphic novel “Jarmil in India” are based on the author’s own experiences when backpacking around India with his friend in 2018. It took almost two more years to finish the comic and most of the places in it are real locations, visited prior by the author himself. Each page is based on a series of photos and drawings, which Marek Rubec transformed into panoramic illustrations. A new friend appears in the book, called Jarmila (a monkey known as the sacred langur), who accompanies the protagonist through all the wonderful and not-so wonderful sights of the Indian subcontinent. The book was published this summer by the Centrala publishing house.


Marek Rubec is a freelance comic artist, animator, and illustrator. His short comics have been published in Czech and European magazines and anthologies, and he was the first Czech artist to design and create the Google doodle logo. In 2013, he won the ARNAL award for the best comic without words, and four years later he won the comics competition at the Prague Frame Festival. He also received the Muriel Award for the best Czech short comic in 2018. In 2016, he took part in an art residency for comic book creators in Malmö, Sweden.
He has gained popularity thanks to a collection of humorous stories about the monkey man Jarmil, living in a strange town somewhere in the middle of Europe, published by Centrala in 2018. This year he published his second book with this freak hero - Jarmil in India. His work is often inspired by the environment of panel houses (prefabricated housing typical of Eastern Europe) and city outskirts.
